Nicholas Barnard MKT302: Marketing Club Meeting 10/1/02
The first marketing club meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, September 24th. The guest speaker for the first meeting was Misty Cox, Marketing Director of the Nutter Center. I found her presentation of particular interest as her presentation relates to my Theatre Studies Major, and more closely to my focus in theatrical/entertainment production.
During her presentation she detailed the general arrangements under which a show is produced at the Nutter Center. She stated that generally a promoter, otherwise known in more general theatre lexicon as a producer, is the primary driving force for bringing a show to the Nutter Center.
Ms. Cox briefly outlined the process that a promoter follows, specifically; usually a promoter purchases an act, then books the date at the Nutter Center and assumes the fiscal risk. The producer after booking the act and the Nutter Center is then responsible for ensuring all the appropriate staff are hired and informed of their responsibilities, and they are also responsible for ensuring that the act is properly marketed. This aspect is where Ms. Cox provides the most assistance to the promoter, as she has a better command the demographic reaches of the media outlets in the Dayton area than the promoter
Ms. Cox also detailed her specific show responsibilities involving managing the Nutter Center on a daily show-to-show basis. She touched on the hours that often are involved with working with a show, and the responsibilities that are involved with ensuring that a show goes off as planned.
Overall this presentation was very valuable, if not a bit shallow in information and detail. It was a truly valuable discussion for me.
